Armored trucks

Autoprotetto Fiat 665 or Gep.Trsp.Wg Fiat 665 (i) was produced in more than 110 units on 1942-43. German troops seizd all the existing vehicles and used them in Yugoslavia, Friuli and Istria, in anti-partisans and escort duties.

Germans modified some Fiat 665 and Fiat 626 by adding an armored roof

1944, beginning of the year, eastern Friuli or in the Gorizia province. This photo shows a Fiat 665 NM Scudato armoured truck from Luftwaffe ground unit (number plate LW 572285) used for convoy escorting purposes. The cabin armour of this type of vehicle was subject to quite substantial variations, as it can be clearly seen from the various photos.

1944, 2nd February, between Comeno and Rifembergo (today Komen and Branik, in Slovenia, north of Trieste). A Fiat 665 NM Scudato armoured truck destroyed in a partisan ambush to an Italian-German convoy. Two German police officers and 20 policemen, and 38 Italians belonging to the Milizia were killed.

1944, February-March, Castelnuovo area. A road block guarded by two Pz.Kpfwg. Ill Ausf. N of the 3. Pz.Sich.Kp. and by men from the I./SS-Pol.Rgt. Bozen and Italian Milizia per la Difesa Territoriale (MDT; it was the equivalent in the OZAK of the Guardia Nazionale Repubblicana in the rest of the RSI-controlled Italian territory). The tank in the background carries the number 314 and the (unidentified) unit symbol on the turret Schürzen; the one in the foreground has apparently only the company number (3) and the symbol beside the driver's visor. The Fiat 665 NM Scudato, belonging to the I./SS-Pol.Rgt. Bozen, has an armoured cover for the crew compartment, which is highly unusual.

1944, Spring. The Lancia 1ZM photographed with an armoured truck of I./SS-Pol.Rgt. Bozen. The truck seems to be a Fiat 626 NM fitted with an adapted armoured cabin from a bigger 665 NM Scudato. Note the SS number plate (number 965034), the projector and the armament mounted on the cabin, a French-produced Saint Etienne Mod. 07T16 machine gun; the same weapon was also used on at least another vehicle of the unit
